For this project, I was heavily inspired by patterns of butterfly wings and the
concepts of transformation/ metamorphosis, fragility, and movement. After researching butterfly species and finding the patterns that inspired me the most, I used Adobe Illustrator to trace and manipulate them into abstracted forms. I was also deeply inspired by the organic spontaneity of Rorschach Test ink blots for their contrast, symmetry, and deeper meaning connected to the transformation of growth and recovery from trauma. I wanted to approach metamorphosis as inherently uncomfortable.
I used these butterfly traces to create double-mirrored designs that would make up my laser-cut paper sculpture. Once cut, pieces were painted with black alcohol ink, tied together, and shaped through intentional crumpling.
The final suspended sculpture took 4 hours to install, only to be cut down in 30 seconds.
